Module 6: Freedom Summer
Book Summary
Book Summary
- It's summer time and best friends John Henry and Joe do as much as they can together. The color of their skin does not change anything between the children even if there are still rules around town that say where colored skin people can be. The children know about the rules and find out that the law was changed to allow people of and color to join each other everywhere. However, the one place the two wanted to go to together is closed. In there eyes their is no difference but there still is. Together they walk in the same.

Impressions
- This book shares a story of friendship during the time of segregation. It was nice to see how the book showcases the importance of friendship even if the rules of color applied during this time. However, it showed how reality was at the time when John Henry knew he wouldn't get to do what Joe does. The boys end up finding a way to share a moment together even if it wasn't what they wanted to do first.

Library Use
- Great book to showcase history. Students can do a history lesson on this book. Using it as a guide to see how segregation affected many people. Have students look up the law of segregation and share what they found and how it has changed.
